Reviews for Rickenbacker Girls

May is clearly well-versed in music history. Beyond Williams and the Byrds, there are traces of the Allman Brothers, Steve Earle and a host of other classic rock and country artists tucked in the crevices of this record. Yet May stands strongly in his own right, a talented story-teller who imbues his music with warmth and authenticity. http://twangville.com/13718/mayers-playlist-for-february-2013-part-1/

From MMuisc Mag

May himself is constantly on the move, jumping from sad-troubadour alt-country to big-riff ’90s rock, flinging lines sharp enough to evoke Ryan Adams and Paul Westerberg.

From Americana Gazette:

Todd May ♪♪♪♪♪

His style and voice remind me of the music coming out of Austin Texas today ala Band of Heathens, Hayes Carl, and Corb Lund. It’s got a real earthy sound and backboneto it. May has the talent and the chops to make a big splash if he can get out and get seen and heard. Rickenbacker Girls is a great start! With a few tours and a few breaks Todd May could easily climb the Americana Charts and sit right along those Texas boys!

From Performer Magazine

“As good as Americana gets”

a voice reminiscent of Steve Earle at his jagged best

If Rickenbacker Girls is any indication, Todd May’s prolific output should include more solo ventures.

Beat Surrender:

Despite flying low on the national and international recognition radar Todd May is more than deserving of a wider audience for his nuanced songwriting which he adeptly manipulates with a broad range of influences into an excellent solo debut.  Read more

Tribune, Pittsburgh PA area- 4 out of 4 STAR RATING

May hits all the right notes on an album whose title track is an ode to the girls he knew in high school at Rickenbacker Air Force Base in Columbus, Ohio. May serves up these uniformly excellent songs with just the right amount of twang, and soars highest on “Josephine Calling,” “Why Don't You Come Out Lately,” “Build a Better Rocket,” “Still Better Than You Ever Thought It Would Be” and the aforementioned title track. Here's hoping May and “Rickenbacker Girls” get the exposure they deserve. http://triblive.com/neighborhoods/yourmckeesport/yourmckeesportmore/3520333-74/track-cough-album#axzz2Mr68MO8c

Dust of Daylight

Rickenbacker Girls Puts May the territory of Steve Earle in singer / songwriter mode and Joe Pug. Todd May has delivered the year's best album so far. And it comes guaranteed high up when I should take stock in December. Dust of Daylight http://www.musikkbloggen.no/2013/02/todd-may-rickenbacker-girls/

“May leads his band of gentleman effortlessly with his wicked and gritty vocals.” - Maverick Magazine

“May digs deep into his Kentucky roots, cranking out twangy tunes . . . like Counting Crows if Adam Duritz had balls” - Joel Oliphint, The Other Paper

Americana has rarely sounded this good . . . like a fusion of Beggars Banquet era Stones, Tom Petty, Gram Parsons . . . great stuff." huskermax.com

". . . A bit like Jay Farrar taking a page from the Jeff Tweedy playboook" Otherpaper

Reviews of Todd May w/Mooncussers:

“Top notch American roots rock and a hook big enough to snag Jaws. Lead single “Lowlight” is a great single that reminds me a little of Jackson Browne back when he mattered, and should appeal to who fans who dwell anywhere on the strip that runs from Springsteen to Gaslight Anthem, with all the Mellencamps, Marahs and Mekons in between.” -My Old Kentucky Blog

"Killer EP . . . reminds me of Jason Isbell with its great rock vibe that pairs gruff guitars with a foot tapping melody" - Twangville

Reviews of Todd May w/the Lilybandits:
No Depression: "The Lilybandits play a song the way they would tell you a story. It will draw you in and make you feel at home . . ."

"An absolutely stunning record that transcends any single style, 33 1/3 conjures up everyone from Big Star to the Jayhawks to the Long Ryders or even the Rolling Stones (with Gram Parsons steering the ship . . ." - Dr. Bristol's Prescription

Rickenbacker Girls. The title track is an ode to the girls Todd met at his high school. Their fathers were Airmen stationed at the local Air Force Base, Rickenbacker AFB. Todd was drawn to them. "I came to know them with their dialects and freckles. Some were expressive. Some were guarded. And they always had to leave. They always went away." Leaving and letting go are apparent themes on the record. Yet, May reminds us that there is always hope, even when we want to cry out for mercy.
